Adolescence is generally known to be a tumultuous stage in every individual’s life. In this particular stage, bodies are changing rapidly, emotions are unfamiliar and unexplainable, and refraining from succumbing to peer pressure is more challenging than ever. According to Erik Erikson, in this stage, individuals ages 12-18 are seeking to establish an identity; a stage also known as identity vs. role confusion. Erickson theorizes that in such a stage, adolescents have certain tasks, one of which is identifying who they are. The adolescence stage also entails a variety of personal challenges and limitations faced as well as needs to be met, including: attention, guidance, independence, stability, among other needs. If their needs are not met, adolescents are more vulnerable and at risk to develop mental health problems just like any other individual going through dramatic changes in their lives. Therefore, an adolescent with a mental health condition faces more needs than an adolescent without a mental health condition. Unfortunately, the mental health field is known to lack in services and individuals with mental health conditions are often prone to being stigmatized. Sexual selection was an idea proposed by Darwin and refers to the process in which males and females attempt to maximize their chances of reproductive success. Within a species there are certain characteristics that make individuals attractive to potential mates. An example of this is in peacocks, female peacocks are attracted to males with long brightly colored tails, even though this makes them easier to be spotted by predators. There are 2 types of sexual selection. Intersexual selection takes place when males compete for the attention of a female. The female will play an active role in choosing her mate and will choose the mate with the best characteristics in order to produce the offspring with the best characteristics. The other type is Intrasexual selection. This takes place when males compete against each other and are rewarded with the female. The female plays a passive role in this. An example of intrasexual selection is Short’s sperm competition. This suggests that males are motivated to ensure that their sperm is successful in fertilization and can compete against other males. This is essential due to how in some species the female will mate with a number of different males so the male with the best fertilizing sperm will win. In humans this has resulted in men evolving to release much larger amounts of sperm after ejaculation to help increase the likelihood of fertilization. Harvey and May suggested that ethic differences in testicle size may reflect adaptive differences in mating strategies within different populations. Samples showed that Chinese mens testicles were approximately half the size Danish mens testicles. Males are more likely to use short term mating strategies as a form of producing offspring due to how they have an unlimited amount of sperm compared to women who have limited amount of reproductive opportunities. Clark and Hatfield helped support this by getting female and male experiments to ask male and female participants if they would like to engage in casual sex. 75% of males said yes while every female participant said no. This helps support the sexual selection theory as it shows that females have to be more careful with mating as they only have a limited amount of opportunities therefore are more likely to enter a longterm mating strategy. Males can have casual sex with little investment so are more likely to then females. This study helps to show the gender differences. Much of the research documenting sex differences in mate choice focus on preferences rather than on real life choices. So a male may have a preference but may have to settle for much less. Mate choice is a product of mate preferences form in the environment of evolutionary adaptiveness (EEA). Sexual selection suggests that females prefer males who they can gain benefits from such as gifts. This is shown in male birds who make nests for females in order to mate with them and also in insects who give nuptial gifts. Sexual selection also suggests that females prefer males who have a strong jawline and prominent cheekbones. These characteristics arise because of a strong presence of testosterone which also helps to indicate fertility within males. Penton-voack found that during a women’s most fertile time in her menstrual cycle they preferred a male whose face shape was more masculinised (strong jawline etc.. ) Suggesting that females like males who show high levels of testosterone, supporting sexual selection theory. Buss explored whether there were universals of human mate preference. His research spanned across 37 cultures and involved 10 thousand participants of different religion,ethnic and economic groups, increasing the validity of the study. He then made the study even more ecologically valid by varying the sampling procedure per culture. Results showed that women in all cultures show a preferences for men with resources while males placed more emphasis on women’s attractiveness as it is an emphasis on their physical health. This supports the claims made by the sexual selection theory that women will form relationships with men for resources as it will benefit them and increase the survivability of their offspring which is a woman’s main evolutionary goal. A problem is in some cultures arranged marriages is the normal and individuals have no choice on their mate as it is already chosen by their parents, so the studies validity can be questioned as this will affect the results obtained. Buss further helped to supported mate choice by looking at real marriages. He found that when males divorce many of them go for younger women when they choose to marry again. This is due to how men will want to be in a relationship with women in their most fertile age and the younger the woman is the more chance of reproductive success the male his. This helps to support the evolutionary theory that a mans main goal is to produce as many surviving offspring as possible. The evolutionary approach can be seen as deterministic due to how it suggests our genes specify exactly how we will behave. The approach fails to take into account that our genes are not the only thing that determine how we behave, the environment in which we grew up in will also have an effect on us. This is known as the nature vs nurture debate where it is argued if our biological factors or the way in which we are brought up makes up how we behave when we grow up. The evolutionary theory suggests that rape is an evolved and adaptive behaviour which enhance reproductive success. Sterglanz and Nash suggest that the theory offers justification for rape as it explains why males who can’t compete with other males for resources and women will produce offspring. I got the opportunity to experience one of those wonders in the almost obsolete town of Fishtail, Montana (population: 478). Cliff Swallows is a riverfront and fishing access about 60 miles from any major highway. It is hidden way back in the mountains, and one would only stumble upon it by chance. Any adventurist would tell say that the best adventures are those that are not planned. And this is precisely how one would find Cliff Swallows; completely by accident. It is one of those places that can take your breath away. There is a saying that beauty is found in the small places that get overlooked. Cliff Swallows could be considered one of those locations. Just a few of the aspects that make Cliff Swallows so special are the pure beauty of nature, how isolated it is, and its ability to make its visitors get lost in their own minds. The first aspect that makes Cliff Swallows so memorable is the scenery. As we made the drive to the river, I couldnt keep from staring out the window. Right alongside the road were cliffs as tall as skyscrapers. As I pushed my cheek as close to the window as I could and looked up, the tops of the peaks were still out of sight it and seemed like they went so high, they could touch the clouds. As we pulled up to the riverfront, I was a little confused. It didnt look like anything special. The supposed parking lot was just a patch of overgrown grass and gravel that had been laid down. There was a little makeshift pathway which was just where previous visitors had trampled through the tall stalks to get to the water. When we got to the waterfront, that was where it all came to life. I had to just sit there for a few minutes to take it all in. Everything was just so peaceful. Upstream, the rushing water of the Yellowstone would crash over the rocks before it settled into the current. Ther e, the river rippled as it flowed, with its only disturbance being a fish jumping and breaking the solid glass top of the water. Its pure beauty is so unbelievable it could make someone wonder How could this place be so hidden?The second element that makes Cliff Swallows so memorable is its complete separation from the busy city life. My grandparents live in a small town called Columbus, Montana. It is about 45 minutes from Billings, the largest city near them. Fishtail is about another 30 minutes off the highway from Columbus. As we continued to drive further out, I couldnt help but think about all the adventures and sights people miss out on from staying in their little local bubbles. It amazes me how some people can stare at four white walls all day and not wonder what else is out there, yet to be explored. The last 20 minutes of the drive to the riverfront consists of dirt and gravel roads canopied by trees. But, when the dome of trees breaks, the only sight in every direction a re mountains and plains occupied by families of elk. And the sunset and clouds painted the sky with pinks and purples. When we finally reached the cliffs, the only thing you could hear was the water and rustling of the wind through the trees. Not a single building or car in sight. It is amazing to be able to unplug from the world sometimes and experience the world as it was originally created. Cliff Swallows is a great place just to go and relax and experience nature. But, it was still rightfully given the name Cliff Swallows for a reason. On the far side of the river, there is a ledge for cliff jumping, which was the whole reason my uncle decided to bring us here. He wanted my sister, cousin, and me to jump with him. At first, I thought he was insane. Eventually, my sister pressured me into jumping with them. As we made our way into the water, it hit me how cold it was. All the water in the Yellowstone River is snow runoff fr om the mountains from the previous winter season. So even in the middle of July, the water temperature was about 45 degrees. We had to allow our bodies to acclimate to the temperature, so we didnt go into shock when we tried to swim across the current. After about 15 minutes of wading in the water, we made our way across the river to the cliff. The whole climb up the top, the suspense continued to build along with the knot in my stomach. It always seems like so much shorter of a drop from the bottom. As we got into position, ready to jump, I had to take a minute to admire the view. Because of how far North we were, and the fact that the water was a result of all the snow runoff, there wasnt much debris or dirt in it yet. The water was as clear as glass. You could see all the way to the bottom. Every rock, boulder, and fish is put at center stage as its viewers admire their beauty. Although it was beautiful, this made the jump a bit more intimidating. But, when one finally finds the courage to jump in, it is one of the most exhilarating feelings. As I hit the chilling 45-degree water, the cold was the last thing on my mind. It felt so incredible like I had become one with the river, and this was where I belonged. There is a quote by George Santayana, the earth has its music for those who will listen. I feel that Cliff Swallows represents this quote perfectly. Swallows could easily be considered one of the many hidden wonders of the world. The seclusion of the area compliments the pure beauty of the untouched creation while allowing so much potential for imagination and adventure. This place holds a special place in my heart. I discovered a lot about not only the world but myself during my visit to Cliff Swallows. I cant wait to travel the world and see what other hidden wonders I can find if I just listen for the music.
